What's In A Name?
Unit Knecker

Warlocks V.S.U was formed around 6 years ago from Scouts from 1st Wiveliscombe Scout Group and 1st Wellington Scout Group. The unit broke away from 1st Wiveliscombe in 1995 after they formed their own Venture Scout Unit (The Barbarians). Since then Warlocks V.S.U. has solely recruited from 1st Wellington. The unit combined the colours of the two groups kneckers to create a unique identity. The unit knecker is half red, half black with an amber border.

What is a Warlock?
We use the term Warlock to mean a male equivalent to Pagan Witch. However there is controversy in Pagan circles over the true meaning of the term. Some say like us that it is a male follower of the Pagan religion, other say it is an outcast to the religion.
The term 'warlock' specifically means 'oath-breaker'; it is used to describe one whose word cannot be safely trusted. To call someone a warlock is a serious matter in Pagan circles. Warlocks are generally outcasts, and can be either male or female.

I thought Pagans were godless heathens!
The term 'Pagan' comes from the Latin 'pagani' meaning 'country-dweller'. During the Middle Ages, when the Roman church began to consolidate its influence in northern Europe (and specifically the British Isles), they concentrated their efforts around the noble courts, which were generally centres of population.
The new religion was not so popular among the common people, who were more interested in tending to their flocks and crops. The noble courtiers, educated by Latin speaking clergymen, referred to these unconverted masses as pagans.

Is the Unit Pagan
No ! We just pinched the term to name the Unit. The unit is multi-domination and therefore Pagans would be allowed to join if they could stand being associated with 'oath-breakers'. However most of our current membership is Christian.
